Top Four Games I Played Last Year

1. Red Dead Redemption

One of the finest games I've played this generation has to be Red Dead Redemption. Initially, it comes off as GTA: Wild West but the more you play it the more you realize how much more polished the gameplay is as well as the story, compared to the last Grand Theft Auto effort. This is thanks to playing such a likeable characeter such as John Marston. Being open-world game, in typical Rockstar Games fashion, it is huge and always filled with something to do whether it's completing a mission where you're shooting it out with dozens of goons, helping random strangers or just completing many of the numerous mini-games such as Poker, Liar's Dice,Arm-Wrestling,Dueling and more. Redepmtion also has morality meter which affected by the players' decsion, many times affected by the outcome of missions and tasks given. There is also an online mode where you can compete against players around the world or cooperatively take on missions together but rounding up players in a gang. Bottomline: This game is worth your time, it can take you 20-25 hours (and a lot more considering side missions) but it is worth every second.

2. Halo: Reach

The premire first person shooter that changed how all play first person shooters is back for one last hurrah (at least by Bungie)and personally is Halo's finest moment. Reach is a prequel in the Halo universe taking place before the events of first Halo game. While I was never crazy about the Halo fiction, this game makes you care about every event leading to the ending. Like many Halo games before it you have a beefy 6-7 hour campaign filled with non-stop action, chills and thrills. Gameplay has been nearly perfected as you get mix of old and new, in terms of options and abilities. There is no more dualwielding that was prevalent in Halo 2 and 3 but now you're equiped with armor abilties that enpower with skills such has sprinting (don't laugh!), jet packs, ammor lock (shield with an amp blast), cloaking and hologram. And even though the campaign is huge, multiplayer is even bigger. As you play with and against players around the world, you can customize your Spartan soldier with credits earned during matches (you can also get for playing campaign) and the amount depends on peformance and as well as some random bonuses. Maps are big and beautiful, with many strategic elements. There so many different modes and so many ways to customize matches it's unbelievable. And with Daily Challenges that award players big bonuses for completing certain tasks within multiplayer or campaign, this hefty package ensures you'll be it for years to come. Yeah, buy it!

3. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Remember that old saying..."I AM BATMAN!" well you really are in Batman: Arkham Asylum and not just because you're playing as him but Rocksteady Games made sure you feel like you're Batman. In this action-adventure game, you play as the Dark Knight and you're not soley beating up baddies, you're sneaking around criminals dispatching them one by one with out letting anyone aware of your presence, you're solving puzzles using evidence and wit and you're exploring Arkham as you try to get one-step closer to Joker. This game has everything going for it, it's presentation is top-notch featuing the incredible voice-acting of Batman legend Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as the Joker. These are the same voices as the acclaimed early 90's Batman: Animated Series. The graphics are impressive as well as sytlized, Batman is a combative beast! The game is setup in metroidvania style where in order to access new areas you must find or earn a certain abilty and Batman has many ungrades at his disposal. Combat is simple yet exciting with such fluidity, racking combos has never been this much fun. Even though this game came out 2009, it still stands up well. With every bataang thrown and every puzzle solved, you've accomplished something great just because you feel like the Batman. If you haven't play it, I recommend you do, with Arkham City coming out this year you don't want to miss out on the excitement 'cuz you are Batman (cue lightning)!

4. God of War III

Despite God of War II still being my favorite game in the franchise, God of War III is no slouch. With an enhanced combat engine filled with new moves Kratos is deadly than ever. In this supposedly finale of the God of War story, Kratos is going to attempt to kill every God in greek mythology...no lie. And as grand as that sounds, the game is even grander! Not only are the graphics superb but the scale of the game is beyond impressive the boss battles with some of the gods are so magnificent because Kratos appear to be some small to them. Taking down colossal creatures and gods have never been so satisfying and I don't think there is another game on the market that has such an awe-spiring scale that runs so fluid and smoothly at the same time. The game should run about 7-9 hours, and while the game is a linear third-person action there are many secrets to be found you upgrade Kratos and find secrets to unlock. If you like ripping off heads, slicing stomach of a centuer, beating a God to a bloodly pulp and just an all-around strong beat 'em up, God of War III is your calling, it's one of the best showcase of the Playstation 3's power and it'll have you wanting to play more even after you're done.
