Garages are for Cars, not making Games!

Are so called “garage developers” devaluing games? That’s what Nintendo thinks. The Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime weighed in with Gamasutra noting consumers are rapidly being taught that games have little to no value thanks to free and bargain-priced software. Fils-Aime says “We want consumers to see value in the software, whatever that appropriate value is. And we want to see that value maintained over time." Earlier this month Satoru Iwata, Nintendo Ltd. CEO, reiterated similar thoughts towards mobile phone gaming at the Game Developer’s Conference.

Fils-Aime also expresses the difference between independent developers and garage developers, comparing garage developers to amateur musicians “There are certainly highly talented people who work other jobs and have a passion to be in the music industry. They work at it.” Despite not willing to work with “hobbyists”, the Nintendo President of America assuredly states Nintendo is willing to support independent developers.

With the market being unpredictable, it’s almost anyone’s game at this point. Will Nintendo’s traditional views prevail or will the new wave of game development take over? Only time will tell.
