Over the weekend I visited my local Toys "R" Us scoping out some of the liquidation deals because if you haven't heard, Toys "R" Us is shuttering their doors for good. The liquidation began some time in late March but I held firm awaiting a sale worth exchanging my currency for.
As your Frugally Neighborhood Sales-Man, missing out on those coveted liquidation deals was not an option, so operation waiting game had launched. When the bold "20% off " sign planted itself on the Toys "R" US window, I simply nodded knowing full well better video game deals existed online. The waiting game commenced.
Then the 20% morphed into 40% off - my body began to swelter. The urge to buy overcame me but I stood fast; they haven't hit the desired threshold so I cemented my patience.
Waiting game, once more.
Assuredly, my Sales-Sense tingled and passing by the local Toys "R" Us was a glorious sign: "ENTIRE STORE 40% TO 60% OFF".
I bit the bullet.
Gleefully strolling into the Toys "R" Us entrance, I was excited to embark on my destined discount journey realizing one day I'll reminisce on how much money was saved, all thanks to this beloved company financially collapsing on itself.
To my unfortunate marvel, the athirst division of the general population took the bait around the 20% period as many of the worthwhile items were no longer available. Nevertheless, I proceeded to scrounge up some not-so-hidden treasures warming my economic-conscious heart.
Here is my Final Haul.
A TRU Discount!(pun intended)
These products were worthy of my frugality.
Nintendo Joy Con Charging Grip - Nintendo Switch
With Nintendo games and accessories being 50% off, I could not resist picking this up knowing at full price it runs about $30 US. Nintendo products rarely go down in price so this was a steal for me. Worth the purchase because without the sale, I'd probably never pick one up. Also the Nintendo section seemed to be a dumping ground for Wii games like Bakugan and Epic Mickey 2.
Dragon Ball Fighter Z - Xbox One
An absolute steal. I could not pass this up at 60% off retail price, that being $60! Worth it, although the sole drawback is the majority of my friends who do play DBFZ are doing so on the Playstation 4. Welp, a sacrifice worth the price.
The Sly Collection - Playstation 3
I've only played Sly 2 and never came around purchasing the original or the following sequels. After the discounts were applied this came up to $5. Not a bad deal for these critically acclaimed games. Sly 4, I'll be ready for you.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole - Playstation 4
I love South Park, if it hasn't been mentioned before. The show is a witty and raunchy ride of ridiculousness and I've heard only good things about the South Park RPG series, South Park: Stick of Truth and its sequel, The Fractured But Whole. My initial idea was to purchase both games for the Nintendo Switch but when I discovered it was unlikely Stick of Truth would appear on the Switch, I quickly snatched the PS4 version of The Fractured But Whole because to my cheap delight, the Stick of Truth comes free! It's almost as if I was getting both games for $15 each! The frugal gods continue to shine on me.
A white plush monkey
My sister loves collecting plush monkeys, couldn't help but pick one up when I saw it. You're welcome sis.
iHome micro USB cable 6ft
It was only $10 and you can never have too many USB cables, am I right? Especially when you need one the most, it either disappears or just happens to stop working. Probably should have bought another one...
MEH, I'll take it
Pretty much I bought them because they were dirt cheap
Castlevania: Lord of Shadows 2 - Xbox 360
Haven't played the Lord of Shadows series of games and truth be told, I mistakenly thought it was the first game when I glanced at the spine. It was quite the shock when I got home. Less than $5.
Wolfenstein: The New Order - Xbox 360
Wolfenstein 3D is the only entry I've had the pleasure of playing and the rest of the games after have somehow escaped my radar over the decades. Well the buck stops here ..especially when that buck is $5.
Midway Arcade Origins - Xbox 360
Comes with 30 + games but in reality I'm just going to play the hell out of Smash TV and Rampage.
Duracell Quantum AA Batteries 8-pack
Well being a longtime avid collector of various brands of batteries for the last ten - just kidding. Who doesn't need batteries?
What I missed out
Items I should have bought but didn't.
Nintendo New 3DS XL Galaxy Style
This normally retails for $199.99 and was marked down to $179.99, I saw it there for a while and was hoping a bigger discount would come along but it was gone. With the Switch performing remarkably, the 3DS is soon heading to the console graveyard and I need a replacement for my stolen Nintendo DS.
I'll get into that later.
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Risky Beats Edition - Nintendo Wii U
I've read about Shantae games in passing but never had a chance to play them. I missed out on the discounted one, but eventually will try out the series for myself.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Nintendo Switch
Another game I was waiting for a bigger discount to knock a few (really, more than half) dollars off the retail price. While the other console editions of Skyrim were as heavily discounted as some of the games on this list, the portability factor increases the value in my eyes, I was just too cheap to pull the trigger. Oh well, Back to Breath of the Wild it is.
That's my final haul. Stay tuned, this won't be the last time I discuss Toys "R" Us.
